Is it true that the Protestants were fleeing to the Mid-East to escape Catholic persecution in Europe?

I heard this from a Protestant Arab before, he said that the Muslims were way more tolerant of them then the Catholics, and yes he is Anti-Catholic but just wondering..Is it true that the Protestants were fleeing to the Mid-East to escape Catholic persecution in Europe?

Actually the biggest problem the official Catholic Curch has in Europe is that some of their priests give ';the cookie'; to protestants in mass.
