Is it true that a airplane always fly into direction of either east or west only?

i was surprised when a collegue told me that a plane can not fly in north or south. pls tell me what is the factIs it true that a airplane always fly into direction of either east or west only?
This is stupid.

How do you think they go from Europe to S Africa? Or from N America to S America. Is it true that a airplane always fly into direction of either east or west only?
Flights from California to China or Japan take almost northerly or southerly routes. They do not fly ';east and west only';. Look at a globe of the world to see why.
NO, not at all.they do travel north to south too! it myt b a myth to ur fren.
Air planes are restricted certain altitudes when flying east or west.

Controlled airway are assigned to aircraft flying in any direction.
For air traffic control purposes planes are generally assigned either an east bound or west bound FLIGHT LEVEL even if they are going mostly north or south.
Your friend is being silly. I personally have flown from Dallas to Mexico city and back twice, and I know there is a non-stop flight between Lexington, KY and Orlando, FL, both of these flights are north/south.
Yep, all those airports that are not due east or west from the departing runway, are not really there. Really, there are only two airports in the whole world.
I am not sure what your friend was talking about.

Airplanes can fly in any direction they choose.
Of course they can fly north and south. How could I have flown from Manchester, NH to Miami,Fl if I could only go east or west?
they can fo N and S how else do you fly from New York to Flordia.
