Is the John Steinbeck novel, East of Eden, a true story?

No, but some of the Hamiltons were characters based on his grandfather's maternal relatives. Is the John Steinbeck novel, East of Eden, a true story?
According to Wikipedia, it was based on reality, but not a completely true story. He based one character on himself early in the novel and the Hamiltons were based on his maternal grandfather's family.

That doesn't mean that everything in the novel happened or that it's an actual account of events. He just chose to use things he was familiar with as a platform for a story he created.
